Angst

Angst is the engine that drives a huge slice of fandom prose. Characters in pain, relationships under pressure, the long slow grind of a problem that won't solve itself in one chapter. Readers don't come to angst to feel good — they come to feel something, and the writers who do it well treat that as a serious responsibility.

Angst in fanfic isn't sadness for its own sake. The good stuff is structured: there's a wound, a stake, a person who could help and isn't, or a person who's trying to help and getting it wrong. The reader stays because the pain is in service of something — a confession that finally arrives, a relationship that has to be earned, a self-image that has to break before it can be rebuilt. Authors who tag heavy angst usually also tag the eventual landing so readers can self-select for the kind of read they want. The form covers a range. Hurt/comfort angst leans into care, where someone present soothes what's been broken. No-comfort angst (sometimes called whump) refuses the rescue. Slow-burn angst makes the relationship itself the source of the pain and the only possible cure. Drama and dark settings often pull the angst register naturally. For first-time readers: try mid-length fic tagged angst + hurt/comfort + slow burn. That combination is usually how fandom writers signal the safest landing.
