Fantasy in fanfic is rarely Tolkien-shaped on purpose. The genre includes the high-magic source-faithful epic, but it also covers AUs that import dragons into modern Tokyo, soft magical-realism slice-of-life, and reimaginings where canon characters wake up in a world the source never built. The unifying thread is the willingness to take the rules seriously.

Fantasy fic in fandom tends to fall into three rough camps. Canon-fantasy fic extends the source's existing magic system — Hogwarts seventh-year that never happened, a new arc of the Naruto war, post-canon dragon-rider politics in the Empyrean. The author respects the existing lore and adds rather than overwrites. Fantasy-AU fic moves a non-fantasy canon into a magical setting — coffee-shop mages, modern witches running a bookshop, a Sherlock Holmes who solves crimes with divination. Crossover fantasy lets two source worlds collide. The genre rewards specificity. A magic system that has real costs and real limits feels grounded. A world where lore has texture — guild politics, religious orders, the small towns that don't show up in the main quest — reads as lived-in. Fantasy fic pairs naturally with slow burn, romance, found family, and drama because the genre gives you the time and the stakes to earn all four. For first-time readers: longer fics tagged fantasy + worldbuilding + slow burn are typically where fandom invests its best craft.
