Identity

Identity fic puts the question who am I now under the magnifying glass. A character is changing, has changed, or is finally noticing what was always true. The plot is often gentle — the real story is internal, and it earns its weight by going slowly.

Identity is one of the deepest seams in fanfic because the source material is so often the wrong size for the character it created. A canon hero finds out the version of themselves the world clapped for never felt like home. A side character realises they've been performing their role since they were a kid. A canonical relationship looks different once the characters stop trying to be what each other expected. Identity fic gives them the room and the chapter count to figure it out. The form covers a lot of ground: queer-coded canon characters writing the realisation arc the source never explicitly gave them; outsider-POV stories where a character sees themselves through someone else's eyes for the first time; post-canon fics where the original quest is over and the lead has to decide what's actually theirs. Common companions: character-study, slow burn, atmospheric, and bittersweet. Identity fic is often best in 20-60k word range — long enough to land the change, short enough to keep the voice tight.
