Loss fic doesn't rush the grief. A character has lost someone, or something, or the version of themselves they used to be — and the story refuses the tidy arc back. These are the fics readers come to when they want the emotion handled with respect, not solved by the last chapter.

In fanfic, stories tagged for loss share a willingness to let grief be unproductive. Characters don't necessarily get better in a linear way. Routines fall apart and get rebuilt in a shape that doesn't quite fit. People they trusted say the wrong thing and have to find their way back. The best loss fics understand that the comfort half of hurt/comfort isn't a switch — it's a long, awkward negotiation that often doesn't fully land. The form pairs naturally with character-study, melancholic, and post-canon settings. Many lean on canon deaths the source treated quickly, giving the surviving characters the screen time the original never did. Others sit with the smaller losses — a friendship that ends without a fight, a self-image that stops being true, a home you can't go back to. Hurt/comfort, found family, and slow burn often weave through because grief tends to reshape relationships. If you read for emotion, look for loss + character-study + slow burn. That combination signals an author who's going to do the work.
