Responsibility

Responsibility fic is about what people owe each other — and what it costs to actually pay it. A leader staying when leaving would be easier. A friend choosing not to walk away. A canon character finally taking on the weight the source kept handing them. These are the fics about being the adult in the room.

Responsibility as a theme tends to live in dramatic, slow-paced fic. The character at the center has a duty — to a person, to a team, to a country, to a younger self — and the story is about whether they can actually carry it without breaking. The genre rewards specificity: the strongest examples are about concrete obligations, not abstract heroism. A captain choosing to write the letter home. A teacher choosing to follow up. A sibling choosing not to repeat the family pattern. The theme threads through canon-setting epics, post-canon codas, and character-studies of canon's overworked leaders (Captain America, Naruto, Kaladin, Aragorn, every Hokage). It pairs naturally with hurt/comfort (the cost of carrying is the wound), with found family (responsibility chosen rather than inherited), and with drama (the conflict between two duties that won't both fit). If the responsibility fic is doing its job, the reader closes the chapter slightly tired in a good way — like they've watched someone do hard work, well.
