Romance

Romance is the genre fanfic was practically invented to do. Two characters with history, weight, and a relationship the source under-explored — and an author with the runway to give them the conversations canon never had. Tags range from soft to feral, from one-shot fluff to fifteen-arc slow burns.

Fandom romance has its own conventions. The pairing is usually the engine, not the world — readers come for the dynamic, and the plot exists to put that dynamic under different kinds of pressure. Authors are expected to honour what the source set up between the characters: their canon voices, their canon conflicts, the specific reasons they would and wouldn't get together. The work is in earning the moment rather than installing it. The form spans a wide range of registers. Soft, low-stakes romance leans on domesticity, banter, and small acts of care — sometimes whole fics are about one weekend together. Slow-burn romance front-loads tension and delays the payoff for tens of thousands of words. Hurt/comfort romance uses crisis to force two people into the same room until they have to be honest. Enemies-to-lovers, friends-to-lovers, and second-chance romance are perennials because the constraint shapes the prose. If you read for the relationship, look for high engagement (kudos, comments, chapter counts) on canon-faithful pairings — fandom rewards writers who know the characters cold.
