Forced Proximity

Two characters and one situation they can't walk out of. Forced proximity is the engine that drives some of fandom's most-reread fic — a snowstorm, an undercover mission, a single hotel room, a small ship — because the constraint forces the conversations the characters have been avoiding for years.

Forced proximity is structural shorthand for a story that needs its leads to stop being able to leave. The setup is often light — there's only one inn in this village, the safe house only has one bed, the storm is bad enough that the road is closed — but the function is serious: the author has bought themselves a chapter, or five, of two people who have to talk. Banter sharpens. Care leaks out around the edges. The thing one of them has been refusing to say for thirty thousand words gets harder to keep quiet. The trope shines brightest paired with slow burn and unresolved sexual tension. It also slots beautifully into hurt/comfort (one of them is injured, the other is the only one there) and undercover work (the fake-relationship variant). Canon-divergent AUs and pre-canon setups give the writer the flexibility to choose exactly the right confined space. Readers who love the trope often come back to specific subtypes — the cabin fic, the road trip, the stranded-on-a-mission fic — because each gives the same emotional payoff a slightly different shape.
