Canon Setting

Canon-setting fics stay inside the world the source built. Same map, same magic, same rules — the author just lives there longer than the original did, fills in the gaps, gives a side character the chapter they never got, or follows the main cast into the morning after the finale.

Canon-compliant doesn't mean canon-photocopy. The strongest canon-setting fics extend rather than contradict: they ask what was happening offscreen, who else was in that room, what the aftermath of a battle actually looked like once the camera cut away. The constraint of staying inside the source's logic is what makes the form rewarding. Readers get to revisit the world they love with the comfort of intact lore, while the author gets the freedom to slow down and explore. Common shapes include missing-scene fics (the conversation we didn't get to hear), post-canon codas (six months after the finale), and side-character ensembles (the supporting cast finally gets a plotline). Canon-setting pairs well with slow burn, character-study, drama, and hurt/comfort — anywhere the source material set up emotional debts the original story didn't fully pay off. If you're new to a fandom, canon-setting fic is the safest entry point. The world is intact, the characters are recognisable, and the author is doing the work of deepening rather than rewriting.
