One of them is sharp-edged, closed-off, half-convinced they're unlovable. The other is warm, persistent, unembarrassed about caring. Grumpy/sunshine is fandom shorthand for one of the most reliable romantic dynamics in fanfic — and the writers who do it well make it feel inevitable.

The trope works because it gives each character a real job. The sunshine character has to be more than nice; they have to be perceptive enough to see what the grumpy character is actually protecting.
